    How time zones work

    The world is divided into 24 nominal hourly offsets from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), but in practice the offsets are far from uniform. Many zones sit on the half hour β€” India is UTC+5:30, Adelaide in South Australia is UTC+9:30 in winter β€” and a few use quarter-hour offsets, the best known being Nepal at UTC+5:45. A smaller number of regions, such as the Chatham Islands in New Zealand, use UTC+12:45. Because this converter relies on the browser's native ICU timezone database via IANA names like Asia/Kolkata, all of these offsets are handled automatically.

    Daylight Saving Time (DST)

    Many countries shift their clocks forward in spring and back in autumn, which means the offset between two cities can change by an hour twice a year. The conversion here always uses the offset that applies on the specific date you choose, so a meeting planned in July between London and New York uses summer offsets (UTC+1 and UTC-4), while the same meeting in January uses winter offsets (UTC+0 and UTC-5). Two edge cases deserve care: the missing hour during a spring-forward transition, and the repeated hour during a fall-back transition. The tool resolves both by referring to the IANA database's rules for the chosen zone.
