How is a tip calculated?
A tip is the bill multiplied by the tip percentage, expressed as a decimal:
For example, an 18% tip on an $85.50 bill: 85.50 × 0.18 = $15.39 tip, for a total of $100.89. Split between 4 people, that's $25.22 each.
For a quick mental shortcut: 10% is just the bill with the decimal shifted one place left, 20% is double that, and 15% is 10% plus half of 10%.

What is the standard tip percentage?
In the United States, the customary tip at a sit-down restaurant is 15–20% of the pre-tax bill. For excellent service, 20–25% is common. For counter service or takeout, 10% or a small flat amount is typical. Tipping customs vary widely by country — in much of Europe and Asia a service charge is already included in the bill.

How do I calculate a tip by hand?
To calculate a 20% tip quickly: move the decimal point one place to the left (that's 10%), then double it. For a $45 bill, 10% is $4.50, so 20% is $9.00. For 15%, find 10% and add half of it: $4.50 + $2.25 = $6.75.

What if the split doesn't divide evenly?
The calculator rounds each amount to the cent. In practice, one person may pay a few cents more or less to cover rounding — the per-person total shown is the mathematically even split.

Should I tip before or after tax?
The most common practice is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, since sales tax isn't part of the service you received. Some people tip on the post-tax total for simplicity. This calculator uses whichever bill amount you enter.

Large groups often trigger an automatic 18–20% gratuity for parties of 6 or more — check your bill first. At a buffet, 10% is generally enough since you serve yourself. For delivery, 15–20% with a $3–$5 minimum is standard.
